In April 2024, the MusicWorks Collective formed a quartet to perform a series of pop-up concerts around Providence. The musicians appeared in a range of community settings, including the John Hope Settlement House, the Providence Athenaeum, the HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center, the Providence Children’s Museum, and Sin Bakery. Audience members across the city welcomed their music with enthusiasm, and Atomic Clock was there to capture the magic.

Palaver Strings | Theofanidis Visions and Miracles
This one-hour program brings together music that is transcendent in nature, drawing inspiration from dreams, medieval chant, renaissance polyphony, spirituality, and the power of silence. Anchored by Christopher Theofanidis’ otherworldy composition of the same name, Visions and Miracles takes us on a journey through the gentle sound worlds of Arvo Part, Max Richter, and Caroline Shaw, interspersed with excerpts of Mendelssohn’s Sinfonia No. 1.

In our musician-led model, Palaver’s musicians share artistic and administrative leadership, guided by a passion for engaging new audiences, addressing social justice issues, and amplifying underrepresented voices. Metamorphosis explores the beauty of pain and transformation through the lens of two monumental works for string orchestra. Strauss’s Metamorphosen looks back on what once was, bearing witness to the trauma and destruction of World War II. Schoenberg’s Verklartke Nacht, meanwhile, looks inward, towards the possibility of redemption through love.
AFFIRMATION: WARP TRIO + PALAVER STRINGS
This program centers music and stories that have been suppressed or misrepresented in mainstream media narratives. At the heart of the project is Affirmation, a new concerto grosso for piano trio, percussion, electronics, and strings. Written by Warp Trio’s own Josh Henderson. Affirmation is a reflection on selected poems by Assata Shakur.
